We’ve seen this countless times before. The entrepreneur wants to take his business to the next level. He is convinced that if he had additional capital, his company would be a great success!
Investors want to invest in high potential companies but first need to see evidence of success. Where the entrepreneur sees opportunity, the investor perceives risk. It may be an early stage company with insufficient market traction, or a later stage company whose growth has stalled. Perhaps management does not have a record of prior venture capital success. Perhaps the two disagree on the market potential for the company's products or services. In the end, the investor determines that the company does not deserve a premium valuation, or worse still, the proposed investment is too risky to merit further consideration.
Changing the game
After years of seeing this pattern repeated, we decided a better approach was needed. Instead of forcing investors to take a leap of faith, we concluded that our clients would be better served if they evidenced definitive proof of market potential and capacity for superior execution.
